How is it possible to send Bitcoin to the wrong address?

Because Bitcoin (BTC) has multiple address formats, it's still possible to send BTC to any Bitcoin SV (BSV) or Bitcoin Cash (BCH) address beginning with the number 1.

When Bitcoin Cash (BCH) was first introduced, it shared Bitcoin's Legacy format for addresses. All BCH Legacy addresses begin with the number 1. This means that it used to be possible to send BTC to a BCH address within Exodus. That said, now that Exodus supports the new BCH address format, CashAddr, sending BTC to a BCH address within Exodus is no longer possible.

On the other hand, Bitcoin SV (BSV) uses the same address format as Bitcoin's Legacy address, which begins with the number 1. This means it's possible to send BTC to your Exodus wallet's BSV address by mistake.

If you've sent BTC to your BCH or BSV address in Exodus, you can recover it by following the steps below.

This recovery method only works on Exodus Desktop. If you have Exodus Mobile or Exodus Web3 Wallet, you can download Exodus Desktop and sync your Mobile or Web3 Wallet to your Desktop wallet to recover your BTC.
