Everything you need to know about TRON (TRX), TRC20 tokens, bandwidth, energy, and how you can freeze TRX to send transactions without paying TRX fees.
Do you need a self-custody wallet to interact with your TRON and TRON tokens? You can download Exodus here.

What is TRON?
TRON is a blockchain network that supports the creation and use of smart contracts. It also allows developers to create tokens, dApps, and web3 apps on the network.
The main asset on the TRON network is TRON (TRX).
The network also supports other tokens built on the TRON network, following token standards such as TRC20 and TRC10.
TRON uses a unique fee system. Transaction fees can be paid with TRON (TRX), or you can freeze TRX to get resources such as bandwidth or energy, which you can use to cover the transaction fees.
Development for TRON was started in 2017 by a Singapore non-profit called the TRON Foundation by Founder and CEO Justin Sun. TRON began as an ERC20 token on the Ethereum network until it migrated to its own blockchain, the TRON network, in 2018.
What are TRC10 and TRC20 tokens?
TRC20 and TRC10 are token standards on the TRON network, each defining different rules for how tokens function.
The TRC20 is a standard based on smart contracts, which allows developers to add advanced functionalities.
TRC10 tokens are easier to create and deploy on the TRON network, but they aren't based on smart contracts, which limits their functionality compared to TRC20.
Sending a TRC20 token to an address that doesn't yet hold that specific token may incur a higher fee because the address must be initialized for that token.
Which TRON tokens does Exodus support?
Exodus Mobile, Exodus Desktop, and Ledger in Exodus Mobile support TRON (TRX) and TRON TRC20 tokens.
TRON (TRX) and TRC20 tokens are not supported with Trezor in Exodus.
Exodus does not support TRC10 tokens, and Exodus Web3 Wallet does not support the TRON network.
You can see all supported TRON TRC20 tokens if you filter by the TRON network in the Assets section of your wallet. For a full guide on how to do this, visit: How do I find an asset by its network?
If you don't see the TRC20 token you want to add, you might be able to add it as a custom token: How do I add a custom token?

Why aren’t TRC20 tokens showing when I try to buy or sell crypto?
Buying or selling TRC20 tokens in Exodus is only available if your TRON address holds a TRX balance.
If you don't hold any TRX in your wallet, TRC20 tokens will not appear as an option when buying or selling crypto in Exodus.
Once you hold a TRX balance, and if buying or selling TRC20 tokens is available in your location, you will be able to buy or sell them in Exodus.
TRON (TRX) is available to buy or sell even if you don't hold any TRX.

How do TRON transaction fees work?
On the TRON network, transaction fees are paid with bandwidth and energy. Your wallet can obtain these resources in two ways.
Freeze TRX: You can freeze TRX for bandwidth and energy. The amount you receive daily depends on how much you freeze. If your TRON account has enough bandwidth and energy, your Exodus wallet will pay the transaction fees with those resources, so you won't need to pay the fees with TRX.
Pay with TRX: If you don't have enough bandwidth or energy, your wallet will use TRX to cover the transaction fees instead. The TRX used covers the bandwidth or energy you need for the transaction.
See the sections below for more information about bandwidth, energy, freezing, and how to pay TRON transaction fees.
Please note that TRC20 tokens cost more to send than TRON (TRX). Additionally, sending a TRC20 token to an address that doesn't yet hold that specific token may incur a higher fee because the address must be initialized for that token.
What is bandwidth?
All transactions on the TRON network use bandwidth, including TRX and TRC20 transactions.
One thing to note is that TRX transactions only require bandwidth, whereas TRC20 transactions require both bandwidth and energy.
All addresses with a TRX balance will automatically get 600 bandwidth. However, you can freeze TRX to get more bandwidth or pay the bandwidth fees with TRX.
What is energy?
Energy is an additional resource for TRC20 token and smart contract transactions on the TRON network.
While all transactions require bandwidth, certain transactions, like those involving TRC20 tokens, will also need energy.
The only way to receive energy is to freeze TRX for energy or pay the energy fees with TRX.
Paying transaction fees with TRX
If you don't have enough bandwidth or energy, your wallet will use TRX to pay the entire cost for whichever resource is lacking. This means you must have enough TRX to pay the fees when needed.
When TRX is used to pay the fees, the TRON network burns it in exchange for the required bandwidth or energy. To check how much bandwidth or energy you can get from burning TRX, visit the website: TRON Resource Calculator.
When you send TRC20 tokens, Exodus will show you the TRON Max Network Fee, which is the maximum you might pay in fees for the transaction. However, you will only be charged the required amount to send the transaction. To learn more, visit: Max Network Fee.
Paying transaction fees with bandwidth or energy
On the TRON network, you can sometimes send transactions without paying TRX transaction fees if you have enough bandwidth and energy.
If your wallet only has enough of one resource (bandwidth or energy), it will use that resource and pay for the other with TRX.
After using your bandwidth and energy, they gradually recover over 24 hours up to the amount you are eligible for.
In Exodus Mobile, if you have enough bandwidth to send TRX for free or enough bandwidth and energy for TRC20 tokens, the send screen will show the estimated number of free sends available for that specific asset based on your current resources.
In Exodus Desktop, if you have enough resources to send the transaction for free, the Network fee will show as 0 TRX on the send screen.
You can freeze TRX to gain more bandwidth or energy. The more TRX you freeze, the more resources you get.
To check how much bandwidth or energy you can get from freezing TRX, visit the website: TRON Resource Calculator.
