What is TRON?

The TRON blockchain is designed to support free and decentralized digital content while keeping transaction fees low through its primary asset TRON (TRX).

TRON is also a blockchain platform for decentralized applications (dApps) and web3 apps.

Development for TRON was started in 2017 by a Singapore non-profit called the TRON Foundation by Founder and CEO Justin Sun. TRON began as an ERC20 token on the Ethereum network until it was launched on its own TRON network in 2018.

What are the benefits of TRON?

The TRON network allows you to send TRON tokens, such as TRC10 and TRC20 tokens, without having to pay network transaction fees. This can be done by freezing some TRON (TRX) in your wallet to get resources such as energy and bandwidth, which can be used to send TRON tokens.

To learn more about freezing TRON, jump to: How do TRON transaction fees work?

If you do not have enough bandwidth or energy from freezing TRON, then you can pay TRON network transaction fees in TRON (TRX).

What are TRC10 and TRC20 tokens?

Like other blockchain networks such as Ethereum, TRON allows users to create or issue tokens.

TRC10 and TRC20 tokens are two different token standards on the TRON network, and they are both TRON tokens, but they have some key differences.

TRC10 is a technical token standard that supports easy token creation, and TRC20 is used to create and execute smart contracts on the TRON blockchain.

For more differences between TRC10 and TRC20, see this guide on TRON's website: TRON Ecosystem Introduction.

Which TRON tokens does Exodus support?

For a full list of the tokens we support, please refer to our Supported Cryptocurrency Assets list.

  • In Exodus, Anything with the TRX Network badge is supported on the TRON network.

  • Exodus does not support TRC10 tokens.

You can download Exodus to interact with the following TRON, TRX, and TRC20 tokens:

Tether (USDT TRX)

TRC20 token

Send, receive, swap

USD Coin (USDC TRX)

TRC20 token

*New BTT is referred to as BTTC in Binance. If sending BTTC from Binance, please use the TRON network.

If you currently hold BTTOLD, and would like more information on the BTT migration, or instructions on how to swap your BTTOLD for new TRC20 BTT tokens, check out this Knowledge Base article: How do I swap old BitTorrent (BTT) for new BTT?

To enable TRC20 BTT, follow the steps in this guide: How do I enable/disable assets in Exodus?

Why can't I see my TRC20 tokens?

If your TRON address doesn't have any TRON (TRX) in it, then it does not exist on the blockchain as a valid address yet.

This means that if you send TRC20 tokens to your wallet, or swap some crypto to a TRC20 token, your TRC20 tokens will not appear. You'll also pay higher transaction fees to send TRC20 tokens to this address.

If your TRC20 token balance does not appear, or if you'd like to send tokens to a new TRON address with a lower fee, you must your activate your TRON crypto address in Exodus.

You can do this by sending some TRX to your TRON address or by following the steps below.

How do I activate my TRC20 tokens?

Mobile

  1. In Exodus, open a TRC20 token wallet, such as your USDT wallet.

  2. If the asset is supported on multiple networks, a) tap the dropdown menu and b) select the TRON network. If not, skip to step 3.

If you do not see the TRON network as an available option, you'll need to enable it by following this guide: How do I enable and disable an asset?

  3. Tap on Activate Account.

Activating your TRC20 wallet will result in a 0.000001 TRX deposit to your TRX wallet.

Desktop

  3. Click Activate Account.

Activating your TRC20 wallet will result in a 0.000001 TRX deposit to your TRX wallet.

How do TRON network fees work?

What are the transaction fees for sending or swapping TRX and TRON tokens?

To send TRON (TRX) and TRON tokens like TRC20 tokens, you can either pay the transaction fee with TRX or you can freeze TRX.

Once you have frozen some TRX or have enough TRX to pay the transaction fee, you can send or swap your TRON tokens.

Paying a transaction fee with TRX

If you do not freeze TRX or don't freeze enough to pay for transaction fees, your wallet will use your TRX balance instead.

You will need to have enough TRX in your Exodus wallet to pay the transaction fee.

TRC20 tokens are more expensive to send than TRX.

In general, to send or swap TRC20 tokens, you will need at least 30 TRX in your wallet.

If you are sending TRC20 tokens to a wallet with no previous transaction history, you will also need to initialize that address, which incurs a higher transaction fee. In this case, you will need 60 TRX in your wallet.

Please note that transaction fees can vary from what's mentioned above and will fluctuate based on the level of network activity.

When you send TRC20 tokens, Exodus will show you the TRON Max Network Fee. This fee is set to ensure your transaction is successful regardless of network activity. You will only be charged the amount required to send the transaction. To learn more about max transaction fees, visit: Does Exodus have transaction fees to send or receive?

Freezing TRX

If you prefer to freeze TRON (TRX) for energy or bandwidth, you can perform transactions without paying transaction fees. Energy allows you to send TRC20 tokens without paying transaction fees. Bandwidth allows you to send TRON (TRX) and TRC10 tokens without paying transaction fees.

To see how much TRX you need to freeze, you can check out the Tron Resource Calculator.

Once you have figured out how much TRX you need to freeze, follow the guide on how to freeze your TRX - How to freeze on Desktop or How to freeze on Mobile.

Bandwidth

Freezing TRON (TRX) for bandwidth allows you to send TRX without having to pay transaction fees. After you have frozen your TRX, you can choose to unfreeze your TRX or leave it frozen. Unfreezing TRX takes 14 days.

Freezing TRX for bandwidth also allows you to send TRC10 tokens without paying transaction fees, however, currently, Exodus does not support TRC10 tokens.

Check out this TRON calculator to find out how much bandwidth you can get for freezing your TRX: TRON Resource Calculator.

Energy

Freezing TRON (TRX) for energy allows you to be able to send transactions with TRC20 tokens and TRON smart contracts without having to pay transaction fees. After you have frozen your TRX, you can choose to unfreeze your TRX or leave it frozen. Unfreezing TRX takes 14 days.

Check out this TRON calculator to find out how much Energy you can get for freezing your TRX: TRON Resource Calculator.
