What is Algorand?

Algorand is a proof-of-stake (PoS) blockchain founded in 2019.

ALGO is the main asset of the Algorand network, and all transactions on the Algorand network require ALGO to pay for the network transaction fees.

Exodus supports ALGO and Algorand Standard Assets (ASAs). If you don't see the Algorand token you are looking for, you can add custom Algorand tokens to Exodus.

How can I explore web3 on Algorand?

With Exodus, you can experience the world of DeFi and connect to your favorite web3 apps on the Algorand network.

You can explore the Algorand ecosystem with Exodus Web3 Wallet. To learn more, visit: Getting started with Exodus Web3 Wallet.

In Exodus mobile, connecting to Algorand web3 apps with the web3 browser or WalletConnect is only available if you created your wallet before April 22, 2026. To learn more, visit the articles:

Why was Algorand's Community Governance rewards program phased out?

As of April 2025, rewards for participating in the Algorand Community Governance program have ended. This means you no longer earn ALGO simply by committing tokens and voting from your wallet.

The good news is that new ways to earn rewards were introduced with the Algorand 4.0 upgrade in January 2025. You can now earn ALGO by running a node or staking your ALGO.

For more information on staking ALGO, visit the Algorand Foundation's guide: Algorand staking.

What are Algorand Standard Assets (ASAs)?

Algorand Standard Assets, or ASAs, are digital assets created on the Algorand blockchain. These assets can range from tokens like stablecoins to NFTs.

Before you can receive an ASA token, your Algorand address must first opt in to it.

When your Algorand address opts in to receive an ASA token or NFT, your account’s minimum balance increases by 0.1 ALGO for each asset you hold. To learn more, visit: What is an Algorand opt-in transaction?

Every ASA transaction requires ALGO to pay transaction fees.

Which Algorand (ASA) tokens does Exodus support?

Exodus supports various tokens on the Algorand network. If you don't see your favorite Algorand token, follow our guide to add it as a custom token.

You can also display your Algorand NFTs in your NFT Gallery in Exodus. To learn more, visit: What is the NFT Gallery in Exodus?

In Exodus Mobile, the NFT Gallery is only available if you created your wallet before April 22, 2026.

What is Algorand's minimum balance?

The Algorand network requires a minimum balance in every account to prevent spam transactions and prevent the network from overloading with inactive accounts.

The current minimum balance for a new ALGO account with no other assets on the network is 0.1 ALGO.

The minimum balance increases by 0.1 ALGO for every Algorand (ASA) token or NFTs an account opts into. For Example, if you opt in to one Algorand token and one NFT, your minimum balance increases to 0.3 ALGO.

The minimum balance will also increase for every Web3 app you opt into.

To decrease the minimum balance, you must opt out of the ASA tokens, NFTs, or Web3 apps your address opted into.

How does Exodus handle ALGO minimum balances?

In Exodus, you must maintain the minimum balance required by the Algorand network.

When using ALGO in your Exodus wallet:

  • If it is your first time using ALGO, you must deposit 0.1 ALGO or more to your ALGO wallet.

  • For every Algorand (ASA) token or NFT you add to your wallet, your minimum balance will increase by 0.1 ALGO.

  • Your minimum balance will increase if you opt into Algorand Web3 apps.

  • When swapping crypto for ALGO using Exodus Swap, your wallet ensures you'll receive more than the 0.1 ALGO minimum.

How do I withdraw my 0.1 ALGO minimum balance?

Every address on Algorand must have a minimum balance of 0.1 ALGO. Exodus cannot send this minimum balance.

However, using the Pera wallet on your mobile device, you could withdraw your 0.1 ALGO with your Exodus ALGO private key from Exodus Desktop. Note that this may expose your private keys.

Pera wallet is a third-party platform that is not affiliated with Exodus. As such, Exodus cannot guarantee the performance of its products/services or that the steps shown and the information provided will always be accurate.

Before you can send out your remaining ALGO, you must first send out any remaining balance of any Algorand (ASA) tokens or Algorand NFTs, and then opt out following these instructions: How do I opt out or remove Algorand (ASA) tokens?

  1. To withdraw your 0.1 ALGO minimum balance, you must view your Algorand 25-word private key using Exodus Desktop. If you do not have the desktop version of Exodus, then you can follow this guide to sync Exodus Mobile or Exodus Web3 Wallet to Desktop: How do I sync my wallet to a computer?

  2. Copy your Algorand 25-word private key from your Exodus desktop wallet. Here's how you can view your private keys.

Please be very careful with your private keys because they control access to your funds. Never share them with anyone, and only import them into platforms that you trust 100%. If you choose to import your private keys into a third-party platform, you do so at your own risk. To find out more, check out this article from our Knowledge Base: How do I keep my money safe?

What is an Algorand opt-in transaction?

Before you can receive an Algorand (ASA) token or NFT or interact with a web3 app, your Algorand address must opt in.

In Exodus, an opt-in transaction will occur when you enable an Algorand (ASA) token, add a custom Algorand (ASA) token or ALGO NFT, or connect to a web3 app. It's not possible to receive an Algorand (ASA) token or NFT unless you've opted in.

To opt in, you'll need to have enough Algorand (ALGO) in your wallet. This is because opt-in transactions incur a network transaction fee paid in ALGO. In addition, the minimum balance requirement increases by 0.1 ALGO for each token and NFT you opt into. The minimum balance requirement also increases for each web3 app you opt into. To learn more about the minimum balance requirement, visit: How Exodus handles ALGO minimum balances.

In Exodus, it is not possible to opt out of Algorand (ASA) tokens added to your wallet. However, you can opt out of Algorand tokens by importing your Exodus wallet into a wallet that supports opting out. To learn more, visit: How do I opt in and enable Algorand tokens?
