How does Trezor work, and why can it improve security?

A cold wallet is one of the most secure ways to store your crypto. But what exactly is a cold wallet?

A cold wallet generated your secret recovery phrases and private keys offline, keeping it safe from online threats. You can learn more about cold wallets here: What are the different types of crypto wallets?

Trezor is a hardware wallet that securely generates and stores your secret recovery phrase and private keys in its flash memory, without connecting to the internet. This makes Trezor a true cold wallet.

When you connect your Trezor to a computer to send a transaction, the transaction is signed offline by the Trezor device. The signed information is then shared with the computer solely to broadcast the transaction.

By generating and storing your secret recovery phrase and signing transactions offline, Trezor can add an extra layer of security to protect your secret recovery phrase and private keys from malware, hackers, and other online threats.

Although the Trezor is a cold wallet, the wallet is only as safe as its secret recovery phrase. Anyone with the secret recovery phrase can control the funds. Never keep any digital copies of the secret recovery phrase, and never share the secret recovery phrase with anyone. How does the Trezor integration work in Exodus?

You can connect your Trezor to Exodus Desktop and your Trezor wallet will show as its own portfolio in Exodus. From this portfolio, you can easily send and receive funds with your Trezor, just like you would with your regular Exodus wallet.

Unlike your regular Exodus portfolio, to send funds from the Trezor portfolio, your Trezor device has to be connected to your desktop with the USB cable that was included when you bought the device.

If you have trouble connecting the Trezor wallet to Exodus and the send button is gray, see the following troubleshooting guide: Why is my send button grayed out?

Trezor is fully supported with Exodus Desktop. After connecting to Desktop, you can also add your Trezor as a view-only wallet in Exodus Mobile. This means you can view your Trezor balance from Exodus Mobile, but it's not possible to send or swap funds from your Trezor with Exodus Mobile. For more information, visit: Trezor on Exodus Mobile.

Exodus Web3 Wallet does not support Trezor.

Is my Trezor linked to my Exodus 12-word secret recovery phrase?

No, your Exodus wallet and Trezor wallet are completely separate.

Because your Trezor and Exodus wallets are not linked, it is essential to write down both secret recovery phrases.

Your Trezor secret recovery phrase is only shown once when you create your Trezor wallet.

  • If you set up a new Trezor Model T, Trezor Safe 3, or Trezor Safe 5 with Exodus, your Trezor will generate an 18-word secret recovery phrase to help eliminate confusion between the Trezor secret recovery phrase and your Exodus 12-word secret recovery phrase.

  • If you set up a Trezor with Trezor Suite, your Trezor will, by default, generate a 12-word word secret recovery phrase for Trezor Model T and Trezor Safe 3, a 20-word phrase for Trezor Safe 5, or a 24-word secret recovery phrase for Trezor Model One.

Your Exodus secret recovery phrase can only recover your Exodus wallet. Only the Trezor secret recovery phrase shown when you first create the wallet can restore your Trezor wallet.

So, it's crucial to keep both the Exodus secret recovery phrase and the Trezor secret recovery phrase safe.

For more information on how to keep your funds safe, see the articles below:

Which hardware wallets does Exodus support?

  • Trezor Model T

  • Trezor Model One

  • Trezor Safe 3

  • Trezor Safe 5

Can I connect multiple Trezor devices?

Yes! You can connect multiple compatible Trezor hardware wallets to Exodus.

Each Trezor will appear as a separate portfolio. You will only be able to send from the Trezor that is currently connected. Others will appear as read-only portfolios in your Exodus wallet.

To connect an additional Trezor, you can follow the steps to set up a new Trezor with Exodus.

Which assets are supported in the Trezor and Exodus integration?

To see all the assets supported in the Trezor and Exodus integration, you can a) look for a checkmark in the Trezor column on the Exodus status page.

If assets are supported on all four Trezor devices (Trezor One, Trezor Model T, Trezor Safe 3, and Trezor Safe 5), they will b) have a green checkmark. Some assets are not supported on Trezor One, in which case they will c) have a yellow checkmark.

Cardano (ADA), XRP (XRP), and Monero (XMR) are not supported on Trezor One, and are only supported on Trezor Model T, Trezor Safe 3, and Trezor Safe 5.

Are Trezor multiple accounts supported in Exodus?

Exodus supports only one account per asset through the Trezor integration.

If you've created multiple Trezor accounts for the same asset in Trezor Suite, these accounts will not be visible or be accessible in Exodus

To manage multiple accounts on your Trezor, please use Trezor Suite. For more information, visit Trezor's guide: Multiple Accounts in Trezor Suite.

Can I stake crypto with my Trezor?

Staking crypto from your Exodus Trezor portfolio isn't supported. Staking is only supported with crypto in your Exodus portfolio.

If you have crypto on your Trezor that you want to stake, you can transfer it to your Exodus portfolio.

To learn how to transfer funds between your Trezor and Exodus portfolios, see: How do I transfer funds between Exodus and Trezor?

For more information on staking crypto in Exodus, visit: Does Exodus pay stakes? How to stake crypto.

Why can’t I see the funds in my Trezor in Exodus?

If you have connected the Trezor to another wallet like Trezor Suite before connecting it to Exodus, the funds you held in the other wallet might not show in Exodus.

Usually, this is because other wallets like Trezor Suite might support a different address format or a derivation path that Exodus does not support. To see the funds in your Exodus wallet, you will need to send the funds to the address Exodus supports for Trezor.

  1. On your computer, close any applications or programs that might interfere with connecting your Trezor device to Exodus. Open Exodus and connect the Trezor to your computer with the USB cable included with the Trezor.

  2. You will need to install Trezor Bridge so your Trezor can connect to Exodus. In Exodus, a) click Settings and b) click Devices. To install Trezor Bridge, c) click Install Now.

  3. Your internet browser will open and take you to the Trezor Bridge download page. To download the standalone Trezor Bridge binary, click on Download.

  4. This will take you to the Trezor GitHub page. From here, you can download and install the correct file for your device. For Mac, use the .pkg file type, and for Windows, use the .exe file type.

Once the file is downloaded, click on it to run the installer and install Trezor Bridge.

For a direct link to the Trezor GitHub page, visit: https://github.com/trezor/data/tree/master/bridge/2.0.27

Why is my send button grayed out?

If the send button in your Trezor portfolio is grayed out, it would indicate that the Trezor is not connected to Exodus or is experiencing connection issues.

To troubleshoot a Trezor that does not connect to Exodus, please follow our troubleshooting guide here: Exodus does not connect with my Trezor

If you use hidden wallets with your Trezor, ensure the passphrase you enter is correct. An incorrect passphrase will connect to a different portfolio or, in some cases, create a new additional portfolio.

If you have trouble connecting to your hidden wallet, ensure that the passphrase is entered exactly as when you created it. The passphrase is case-sensitive, so check if you might have enabled Caps Lock on accident.

You can also try connecting to your standard wallet, as shown here, to see if that solves the connection issue.

For more information on troubleshooting hidden wallets, see the article: What is a Trezor hidden wallet?
