What is Algorand's Community Governance model?
Algorand’s Community Governance program allows ALGO holders to participate in the decision-making process. To participate, you commit your ALGO for the duration of a governance period, and your voting power is based on the amount you commit.
Since the governance reward system ended, governance periods have been relatively short and have only occurred as needed.
To ensure your vote counts, your wallet balance must remain at or above the committed ALGO amount until the voting session ends. This ensures a fair and accurate voting process across the network.
Algorand governance rewards have ended
As of April 2025, rewards for participating in the Algorand Community Governance program have ended. This means you can no longer earn ALGO rewards by committing tokens to the governance program.
Governance Period #14 (December 31 – March 31, 2025) was the final cycle in which governance rewards were distributed.
Going forward, Algorand Governance sessions will continue as community-driven decision-making events, but no rewards will be offered for participating.
What's next for Algorand rewards?
As of the Algorand 4.0 upgrade in January 2025, you can collect rewards for running nodes or staking ALGO.
If you have 30,000 ALGO or more, you can run your own node or consider delegated staking to earn rewards.
If you have fewer than 30,000 ALGO, you can consider liquid staking or staking pools to earn rewards.

What is the Community Governance program?
The Algorand Community Governance program launched in 2021. Any Algorand address can participate by committing ALGO to the program for the governance period and voting in governance sessions.
By committing ALGO and voting, you're actively contributing to the growth and development of the Algorand ecosystem.
Governors
Any address holding ALGO can sign up as governor during the registration phase by sending a zero-ALGO transaction to a designated sign-up address, with a note provided by the Algorand Foundation in the Public Memo field. The Algorand Foundation provides a web portal that enables anyone to generate a sign-up transaction in the right format.
This zero-ALGO sign-up transaction can be sent using your Exodus Algorand wallet.
Voting
The Algorand Foundation announces the voting sessions for each governance period with a list of proposals to be voted on. Voting sessions are open for approximately two weeks.
To vote on proposals during the governance period, governors can send a zero-ALGO payment transaction from their committed wallet to a designated voting address with the details of the vote encoded in the Public Memo field. The weight of the vote will equal the number of ALGO that the governor's account committed to the governance period.
When do governance periods take place?
Governance periods are typically short and added only as needed.
To learn more about upcoming governance periods and when you will sign up as a governor and vote, please refer to Algorand's newsletter or follow their official X account.
In addition, if you have questions that are not covered under the Algorand Foundation's newsletter, you can email them directly at [email protected].
How can I participate from my Exodus wallet?
You can sign up to be a governor and vote from Exodus.
The zero-ALGO transaction (with a note provided by the Algorand Foundation in the Public Memo field) that is used to sign up and vote can be sent using any Exodus wallet.
