In this article:

What was the MATIC to POL migration?

On September 4, 2024, Polygon migrated the MATIC token to the new POL token, and POL became the new primary asset of the Polygon network.

This migration from MATIC to POL was spurred by the Polygon community's recommendation to improve the utility of their primary asset.

What happened to my Polygon (MATIC) tokens?

Depending on which network you held MATIC on during the migration, your MATIC tokens either automatically migrated to POL, or you'll need to manually swap your MATIC tokens if you want the new POL token.

  • Currently, POL on Polygon in Exodus will still have the MATIC ticker.

  • As of now, there is no deadline for when to migrate to POL. However, the Polygon community could change this in the future.

MATIC on Polygon

If you held MATIC on the Polygon network, then all your MATIC was automatically migrated to the new POL token on September 4, 2024.

MATIC on Ethereum

If you held MATIC on Ethereum during the September 4, 2024 migration, the two scenarios below describe how you were affected.

MATIC was staked:

If your MATIC was staked during the migration, then you will be able to continue to stake MATIC with your Exodus wallet and earn rewards as normal.

This is because, after the migration to POL, the Polygon network maintains backward compatibility with staking the MATIC token on Ethereum.

When you unstake your MATIC, the claim withdrawal will be MATIC on Ethereum.

Exodus currently does not support staking the POL token on Ethereum.

MATIC wasn't staked:
If you didn't stake your MATIC tokens on Ethereum during the migration, then your MATIC tokens were not automatically migrated to the new POL tokens.

If you decide to start staking your MATIC, the MATIC tokens you stake will not automatically migrate to the new POL token.

If you currently hold MATIC tokens on Ethereum, you can use Exodus Swap to swap your MATIC tokens for the new POL token.

Currently, there is no deadline for when to migrate to POL. However, the Polygon community could change this in the future.

If you want to start staking Polygon in Exodus, please note that Exodus only supports staking Polygon with the MATIC token on Ethereum. Staking the POL token is currently not supported. To learn more about staking MATIC with Exodus, visit: Staking Polygon (MATIC) FAQs.
