What is Polygon (MATIC) staking?

You can stake Polygon (MATIC) on the Ethereum network.

By staking MATIC, you actively support the Polygon network by allocating resources and contributing to its stability. Staking allows you to earn MATIC rewards that you can claim with your Exodus wallet.

In Exodus, staking MATIC means you agree to lock up an amount of MATIC for a time, during which you can't send or swap your tokens.

You can unstake your MATIC whenever you choose. The unstaking process takes 3-4 days, after which you must claim your unstaked MATIC to return it to your wallet.

You will need at least 1 MATIC to start staking and enough Ethereum (ETH) to pay the staking transaction fees.

Polygon (MATIC) staking FAQs

Answers to frequently asked questions about staking Polygon (MATIC).

What happens when I stake my MATIC?

When you stake your MATIC, you are delegating it to a validator.

Validators earn rewards by maintaining and securing the Polygon network. Rewards are then distributed to everyone who delegated (staked) their MATIC with the validator.

For an in-depth explanation of how MATIC staking works, visit the Polygon team's documentation: Introduction to Polygon PoS.

Is staking MATIC safe?

Staking your MATIC is done in a self-custodial way in Exodus.

Your MATIC is staked through the use of smart contracts. Only you have the control to withdraw your staked MATIC and rewards from the smart contract.

If you decide to stop staking MATIC, you can unstake it anytime. The unstaking process takes 3-4 days, after which you must claim your unstaked MATIC to return it to your wallet.

How does staking work?

When you stake your MATIC, you can choose how much MATIC you want to stake, as long as it's above the minimum stake amount of 1 MATIC.

After staking, you will begin to accumulate rewards immediately. However, you need to wait until you have earned at least 1 MATIC before you can claim rewards.

Staked MATIC is locked. You can only send and swap MATIC that is not staked.

Which validator will I be delegating my funds to?

When you stake MATIC in Exodus, you will support our third-party staking API provider Everstake.

How much can I earn from staking MATIC?

To learn more about Annual Percentage Yield (APY), please visit: What is APY?

In Exodus Mobile, you can view the estimated APY in the staking section of your MATIC wallet.

In Exodus Desktop, you can view the estimated APY in the staking section of your MATIC wallet.

In Exodus Web3 Wallet, you can view the estimated APY in the staking section of your MATIC wallet.

Are there fees to stake MATIC?

Yes, you will pay a network transaction fee to the Ethereum network whenever you stake, unstake, claim unstaked MATIC, or claim rewards. These fees are paid in Ethereum (ETH).

  • Stake transaction fee: The fee when staking your MATIC on the network

  • Unstake transaction fee: The fee to unstake your MATIC

  • Claim unstaked MATIC transaction fee: The fee to claim unstaked MATIC after the unstaking period

  • Claim rewards: The fee to claim MATIC rewards

To learn more about network transaction fees, please visit: What are transaction fees?

What is the minimum amount I need to start staking?

The minimum amount you can stake is 1 MATIC.

After you start staking, each time you stake more, you'll need to stake at least 1 MATIC.

When you stake MATIC, you will need some Ethereum (ETH) to pay the stake transaction fee.

When will I start earning rewards?

When you start staking MATIC, you will immediately begin to generate rewards. Your rewards balance is updated multiple times daily, so you will continue to see gradual increases over time.

You can view your earnings in your MATIC wallet's Stake section: How do I see my MATIC rewards?

For a guide on how to claim your rewards, jump to: How do I claim my MATIC rewards?

You won't earn rewards on your balance of unclaimed staking rewards. If you want your rewards to compound, you'll need to claim your rewards and stake them.

Why are my available rewards different from my all-time earnings?

a) All-Time Earnings show the total amount of rewards you have earned from staking MATIC. b) Available Rewards show the rewards you have earned but have not yet claimed.

When you claim your Available Rewards, that balance resets to 0 MATIC. Your All-Time Earnings do not reset and will continue to increase as you earn more rewards over time.

You can only claim rewards once your Available Rewards reach at least 1 MATIC.

You can track your earnings progress in your MATIC wallet's Stake section: How do I see my MATIC rewards?

For a guide on how to claim your available rewards, see: How do I claim my MATIC rewards?

You won't earn rewards on your balance of unclaimed staking rewards. If you want your rewards to compound, you'll need to claim your rewards and stake them.

How long until my MATIC finishes unstaking?

MATIC usually takes 3-4 days to unstake.

In Exodus Desktop, in the polygon staking menu, a) click on In Progress. b) Here, you can see the days remaining until your MATIC is unstaked and ready to be claimed.

For a more accurate estimation of when your MATIC will finish unstaking, you can check the remaining number of checkpoints left by connecting to the official Polygon staking portal.

After connecting, you can check the History tab to see the remaining checkpoints before your MATIC finishes unstaking. Every checkpoint takes approximately 30 minutes. However, some checkpoints might take longer depending on the traffic on the Ethereum network.

Once the unstaking period is complete, you can claim your unstaked MATIC.

Why can't I stake Polygon Ecosystem Token (POL)?

Currently, Exodus only supports Polygon staking with Polygon (MATIC) on Ethereum.

In September 2024, Polygon migrated to the POL token.

After the migration, there are now two different Polygon tokens on the Ethereum network. The original Polygon (MATIC) token and the new Polygon Ecosystem Token (POL) token.

Staking is not supported for the new Polygon Ecosystem Token (POL).
