What is Polygon (MATIC) staking, and how can I benefit from it?
You can stake Polygon (MATIC) on the Ethereum network to earn passive income.
By staking your MATIC, you actively support the Polygon network by allocating resources to it and contributing to its stability. In return, you earn MATIC on Ethereum as a reward!
In Exodus, staking MATIC means you agree to lock up an amount of MATIC for a time, during which you can't send or swap your tokens.
You can unstake your MATIC whenever you choose. The unstaking process takes 3-4 days, after which you must claim your unstaked MATIC to return it to your wallet.
You will need at least 1 MATIC to participate in staking. The more MATIC you stake, the more MATIC rewards you will earn.

Polygon (MATIC) staking FAQs
Answers to frequently asked questions about staking Polygon (MATIC).
What happens when I stake my MATIC?
When you stake your MATIC, you're delegating your MATIC to a validator. By delegating your tokens to a validator, you vote for and signal your trust in it.
Validators earn rewards by maintaining and securing the Polygon network. Rewards are then distributed to everyone who delegated (staked) their MATIC with the validator.
If you would like an in-depth explanation of how MATIC staking works, you can read the Polygon team's documentation: Introduction to Polygon PoS.
Is staking MATIC safe?
Staking your MATIC is done in a self-custodial way in Exodus.
Your MATIC is staked through the use of smart contracts. Only you have the control to withdraw your staked MATIC and rewards from the smart contract.
If you decide to stop staking MATIC, you can unstake it anytime. The unstaking process takes 3-4 days, after which you must claim your unstaked MATIC to return it to your wallet.
How does staking work?
When you stake your MATIC, you can choose how much of your MATIC you want to delegate to the validator.
You must stake a minimum of 1 MATIC.
After staking, you will begin to accumulate rewards immediately. However, you need to wait until you have earned at least 1 MATIC before claiming your rewards.
While staking is active, you will only be able to send and swap MATIC tokens that aren't staked.
Which validator will I be delegating my funds to?
When you stake your MATIC in Exodus, you will support our staking API provider Everstake.
Everstake has a comprehensive guide on how they manage MATIC staking, which you can read here: Polygon Overview: Scaling the Ethereum Blockchain.
How much can I earn from staking my MATIC?
To learn more about Annual Percentage Yield (APY) and how to view the current APY for MATIC, please check out: What is APY?
On Exodus Mobile, you can see a summary of the Average Reward Rate and your Earnings in the staking section of your MATIC wallet.
On Exodus Desktop, when the Ethereum network is selected in your MATIC wallet, you can see the APY for staking MATIC in the top left corner.
On Exodus Web3 Wallet, in your MATIC staking section, you can see the average APY for staking MATIC in the overview.
Does Exodus charge a fee to stake my MATIC?
No, Exodus does not charge a fee to stake MATIC.
However, there are a few Ethereum network fees when staking MATIC. 100% of these fees go to the Ethereum network. They are paid in Ethereum (ETH).
Stake transaction fee:
- The transaction fee for sending the delegation transaction when you stake your MATIC
Unstake transaction fee:
- The transaction fee for unstaking your MATIC
Claim unstaked MATIC transaction fee:
- The transaction fee for claiming unstaked MATIC after the 3-4 day unstaking period
Claim rewards transaction fee:
- The transaction fee for moving your MATIC rewards from your staking address to your regular address
To learn more about network fees, visit: What are transaction fees?
What is the minimum amount I need to start staking?
You need to stake at least 1 MATIC.
Each time you want to stake more MATIC, you must also stake at least 1 MATIC.
When you stake MATIC, you will need some Ethereum (ETH) to pay the stake transaction fee.
When will I start earning rewards?
When you decide to stake your MATIC, you will begin to generate rewards right away. Your rewards balance is updated multiple times a day, so you will continue to see gradual increases over time.
You can view your earnings in your MATIC wallet's Stake section: How do I see my MATIC rewards?
For a guide on how to claim your rewards, jump to: How do I claim my MATIC rewards?
You won't earn rewards on your balance of unclaimed staking rewards. If you want your rewards to compound, you'll need to claim your rewards and stake them.
Why are my available rewards different from my earnings?
While you continually earn rewards by staking MATIC, you can only claim those rewards once your earnings reach at least 1 MATIC.
a) Earnings shows the amount of rewards you have earned from staking MATIC. When you have earned at least 1 MATIC, you will see the amount you can claim in b) Available Rewards:
When you claim your available rewards, your Earnings and Available Rewards balance will reset back to 0 MATIC.
You can track your earnings progress in your MATIC wallet's Stake section: How do I see my MATIC rewards?
For a guide on how to claim your available rewards, jump to: How do I claim my MATIC rewards?
You won't earn rewards on your balance of unclaimed staking rewards. If you want your rewards to compound, you'll need to claim your rewards and stake them.
How long until my MATIC finishes unstaking?
MATIC usually takes 3-4 days to unstake.
In Exodus Desktop, a) click on the Rewards app, then b) click on Overview. You can see the days remaining until your MATIC is unlocked in the Unstaking field.
For a more accurate estimation of when your MATIC will finish unstaking, you can check the remaining number of checkpoints left by connecting to the official Polygon staking portal.
You can connect with Exodus Mobile via WalletConnect or connect with Exodus Web3 Wallet.
After connecting, you can check the History tab to see the remaining checkpoints that are left before your MATIC finishes unstaking. Every checkpoint takes approximately 30 minutes. However, some checkpoints might take longer depending on the traffic on the Ethereum network.
Once the unstaking period is complete, you can claim your unstaked MATIC.
How do I swap MATIC on Polygon to MATIC on Ethereum?
Staking MATIC can only be done on the Ethereum network. If you have a balance of MATIC on the Polygon network, you'll need to swap it for MATIC on the Ethereum network.
To swap your MATIC from the Polygon network to the Ethereum network, follow the steps in our guide: How do I swap crypto in Exodus Swap?
Here's what your swap screen will look like to swap MATIC on Polygon to MATIC on Ethereum:
