Why is my available balance less than my total balance?
In Exodus, your total balance is the amount of crypto in your wallet.
Your available balance is the maximum amount your wallet can send or swap from your total balance.
Your available balance may be lower than your total balance for a few reasons:
Fees: Network fees are automatically deducted from your balance when you send crypto. For example, if you have $50 in Bitcoin and the fee for sending the transaction is $1.50, you will see $48.50 as the available balance. That is the amount you can send after the network fees.
Pending deposits: Funds from pending transactions are not yet confirmed on the blockchain and can’t be spent. These pending funds are not included in your available balance and are marked with a Pending tag in your transaction list. Once the transaction is confirmed, the funds will be available. If you're curious why your transaction is pending, visit: Why are my transactions pending?
Minimum balance: Your available balance will also deduct any minimum balance requirements set by the asset's network, such as the minimum balance for XRP (XRP) and Polkadot (DOT).
Staking: Some assets are locked while staking, and the staked balance can't be sent or swapped. To make it available again, you will need to unsake it. For more information about which assets are locked while staking, visit: How does staking work in Exodus?
Your Exodus wallet calculates transaction fees automatically. 100% of the transaction fee goes to the network. Exodus doesn't charge or keep any of this fee. You can learn more here: Does Exodus have transaction fees to send or receive?

Examples of when the available balance is lower than the total balance
Let’s look at some wallet examples where the available balance is lower than the total balance and explore the reasons behind it.
Video tutorial: Why is my available balance less than my wallet balance?
Bitcoin (BTC)
In this example, we can see the wallet has a total balance of 0.00437392 BTC.
However, this wallet can only send or swap 0.00435596 BTC, as the transaction fee is 0.00001796 BTC.
XRP (XRP)
The XRP network enforces a minimum balance requirement. Currently, all XRP holders require at least 1 XRP for their addresses to remain active.
Let's take a look at how the minimum balance affects available XRP balances.
In the example below, we can see the wallet has a total balance of 10 XRP.
However, this wallet can only send 8.995 XRP, as it needs to maintain a balance of 1 XRP for the minimum balance requirement, and because the transaction fee is 0.005 XRP.
Polkadot (DOT)
The Polkadot network enforces a minimum balance requirement. Currently, all DOT holders require at least 1 DOT for their addresses to remain active.
Let's take a look at how the minimum balance affects available DOT balances.
In the example below, we can see the wallet has a total balance of 1.7336795 DOT.
However, this wallet can only send 0.69367948 DOT, as the wallet needs to maintain a balance of 1 DOT for the minimum balance, and the network fee for sending the transaction is 0.02 DOT.
How do I see which part of my balance is unavailable?
Desktop
In Exodus Desktop, if a part of your balance is unavailable for reasons such as pending transactions, staking, or minimum balances, you'll see a prompt in the asset wallet showing a breakdown of the unavailable amount:
Please note that this prompt does not account for transaction fees. While transaction fees are not included in the unavailable amount shown, they will still be deducted from your balance.
If there are multiple reasons why funds are unavailable, you can click on the arrow in the prompt to expand it and view a detailed breakdown of each reason:
Mobile
In Exodus Mobile, if a part of your balance is unavailable due to reasons such as pending transactions, staking, or minimum balances, then your balance will be highlighted throughout the wallet. You can tap the highlighted balance to see more details about the unavailable funds.
Here are some examples of the balance being highlighted due to unavailable funds.
Viewing the unavailable balance in the asset's wallet:
If the asset is only enabled on one network and you have unavailable funds, your balance will be highlighted. Tap the balance to view the details.
If the asset is enabled on multiple networks, then in the asset's wallet, a) tap on the arrow next to Balance by network, and b) the balance on the network with unavailable funds will be highlighted. Tap it to view the details.
Unavailable balance when sending a transaction:
While sending, if you have unavailable funds, the Remaining balance will be highlighted. Tap it to view the details.
Unavailable balance when swapping:
When swapping, if you have unavailable funds, your available balance will be highlighted. Tap it to view the details.
If you tap on the highlighted balance, as shown in the examples above, you'll see a breakdown of the funds currently unavailable to spend.
Please note that this prompt does not account for transaction fees. While transaction fees are not included in the unavailable amount shown, they will still be deducted from your balance.
Web3 Wallet
Exodus Web3 Wallet currently does not support viewing the breakdown of unavailable balances.
However, as in other versions of Exodus, you will only be allowed to select your available balance when sending. You can click on the Max button when making a transaction to see your current available balance:
