Fantom (FTM) migration to Sonic (S)

Fantom (FTM) is migrating to the Sonic (S) token on the Sonic network. Learn how the migration might affect you.

Updated over a month ago

From December 2024, Fantom (FTM) has begun migration to the new Sonic (S) token on the Sonic network.

Learn how the migration affects you if you hold Fantom (FTM) in Exodus.

In this article:

What is the Fantom (FTM) to Sonic (S) migration?

The Fantom Foundation is migrating the Fantom (FTM) token on the Fantom Opera network to the Sonic (S) token on the Sonic network.

Currently, if you hold Fantom (FTM), you can migrate it to Sonic (S) using Sonic Labs' upgrade tool.

For the first six months of the Sonic launch, you will be able to swap Fantom (FTM) to Sonic (S) at a 1:1 rate.

For instructions on how to do this, jump to: How do I migrate my Fantom (FTM) to Sonic (S)?

There is no set deadline for when FTM holders need to migrate their tokens, because the Fantom Opera network and the FTM token will continue to operate for the foreseeable future.

For more information about the Sonic network, the Sonic (S) token, and the token migration, please visit Sonic's website: Sonic FAQ.

What if I hold Fantom (FTM) in Exodus?

If you hold Fantom (FTM) on the Fantom Opera network in Exodus, you can still store and transact it as usual. You do not need to migrate Fantom (FTM) to Sonic (S) unless you decide to.

The Fantom Foundation announced that the FTM token will continue to be supported and be fully operational for the foreseeable future.

Currently, Exodus does not offer support for the Sonic network.

How do I migrate my Fantom (FTM) to Sonic (S)?

Currently, Exodus does not support the Sonic (S) token on the Sonic network.

As such, migrating your Fantom (FTM) on the Fantom Opera network will require a desktop computer and MetaMask.

MetaMask is a third-party platform. As such, Exodus cannot guarantee the performance of its products/services or that the steps shown and the information provided will always be accurate.

  1. Download Exodus Desktop here.

  2. Next, write down the 12-word secret recovery phrase of your Exodus Mobile or Web3 wallet. To find this, please see:

Please be very careful with your 12-word secret recovery phrase and private keys, because they control access to your funds. Never share them with anyone, and only import them into platforms that you trust 100%. If you choose to import your secret recovery phrase or private keys into a third-party platform, you do so at your own risk. To find out more, check out this article from our Knowledge Base: How do I keep my money safe?

  3. Now you will need to restore your Exodus wallet to the desktop wallet you just downloaded. For instructions, please visit: How do I restore from my 12-word secret recovery phrase?

  4. Next, go to MetaMask's website and download the MetaMask wallet.

  5. In your Exodus Desktop, open the FTM wallet.

  6. Export the FTM private key from the wallet inside Exodus. Here's how you can obtain your private key: How do I view my private keys?

  7. Back in MetaMask, import your Fantom (FTM) private key by adding a new account. The following MetaMask guide explains how to do this: Importing an Account.

  8. After importing your private key, add the Fantom Opera network to MetaMask. The following MetaMask guide explains how to do this: How to add a custom network RPC.

Be sure to add the following details to the relevant sections when adding the network:

    a) Network Name: Fantom Opera
    b) RPC: https://rpc.ftm.tools/
    c) ChainID: 250
    d) Symbol: FTM
    e) Block Explorer: https://ftmscan.com

  9. Now, visit Sonic Labs' upgrade tool and connect your MetaMask wallet:

  10. Once connected, a) choose the amount of FTM you want to upgrade to Sonic (S), and b) click Upgrade.

  11. To see and interact with your S token on MetaMask, add the Sonic network. The following MetaMask guide explains how to do this: How to add a custom network RPC.

Be sure to add the following details to the relevant sections when adding the network:

    a) Network Name: Sonic Mainnet
    b) RPC: https://rpc.soniclabs.com
    c) ChainID: 146
    d) Symbol: S
    e) Block Explorer: https://sonicscan.org

That's it! Your Fantom (FTM) on the Fantom Opera network has been migrated to Sonic (S) on the Sonic network.

What if my Fantom (FTM) isn't on the Fantom Opera Network?

If you hold FTM on Ethereum, the Sonic team has indicated that you can wait for the upgrade portal to support upgrading FTM on Ethereum to S on Sonic.

They gave no timeline for when this will be possible, but you can check the status on Sonic's website: Sonic FAQ.

You can also swap your FTM on Ethereum to FTM on Fantom Opera on a centralized exchange.

Once you find a trusted service, you can send your FTM on Ethereum to make your swap:
