Why might I need to export an .eml file?
If you have reported a suspected phishing attempt to Exodus Support, you may be asked to export an .eml file of the suspicious email so that Exodus Support can safely inspect the email you have received.
An .eml file contains email messages, email file attachments, and email metadata, which is information about the email. File attachments are encoded in text format.
The .eml file contains all the email content in text format, which can be helpful when investigating suspicious emails. The content can be viewed without the risk of clicking or opening malicious links or attachments.
While the .eml file contains the details about the email you received, it doesn't contain any information that could put your email account at risk, such as your password.
How do I export an email as an .eml file?
Gmail
These steps will show you how to export an email in Gmail on desktop as an .eml file or on mobile as a .pdf file.

Desktop
These steps will show you how to export an email as an .eml file in Gmail.
In Gmail, open the message, a) click on the menu icon in the top right corner, and b) select Show Original to open it as a text document. The message will open in a new window.
To save the email as an .eml file, click Download Original. Add .eml to the end of the file name and save it.
That's it! If Exodus Support has requested an .eml file to investigate a possible phishing attempt, you can now attach your .eml file in reply to your ongoing conversation with support@exodus.com.
Mobile
It's not possible to export an email as an .eml file with Gmail on mobile. However, you can export it as a .pdf file to share with Exodus Support.
Please note that if you have access to a desktop device, you can export the email as an .eml file using Gmail on desktop. For more information, see the desktop guide.
In this guide, we'll show you how to export an email as a PDF on iOS and Android.
The steps below only work in the Gmail mobile app and do not work in a mobile browser.
Gmail on iOS
In the Gmail app, open the message, a) tap on the three dots, then b) tap Print.
Tap on the share icon.
Tap Save to Files to save it as a .pdf file.

Gmail on Android
In the Gmail app, open the message, a) tap on the three dots, then b) tap Print.

Proton Mail
In this, we'll go over how to export an email as a .txt file on desktop and mobile. A .txt file is the equivalent of an .eml file.
Proton Mail, TextEdit, and Notepad are third-party platforms that are not affiliated with Exodus. As such, Exodus cannot guarantee the performance of the products/services or that the steps shown and the information provided will always be accurate.
Desktop
These steps will show you how to export an email from Proton Mail on Mac or Windows as a .txt file.
Proton on Mac
In Proton Mail, open the message, a) click on the three dots, and b) select View HTML.
This will convert the email to HTML text.
Highlight all the text with your cursor, right-click on the highlighted text, and then click Copy. Alternatively, press CMD+C to copy the text to your clipboard.
Paste the copied text into a text editor. For security reasons, save the text document as a .txt file.
On Mac, you can save the text with TextEdit. To save the file as a .txt file, open TextEdit, a) click Format, then b) select Make Plain Text.
Paste in the text you copied from Proton Mail. Click a) File, and then click b) Save. This will save the file as a .txt file. You can attach this .txt file in your email response to us.

Proton on Windows
In Proton Mail, open the message, a) click on the three dots, then b) select View HTML.
This will convert the email to HTML text.
Highlight all of the text with your cursor and right-click on the highlighted text, then click Copy. Alternatively, press CTRL+C to copy the text to your clipboard.
Paste the copied text into a text editor. For security reasons, save the text document as a .txt file.
On Windows, you can save the text with Notepad. To save it as a .txt file, open Notepad, paste in the text, and save the file. You can attach this .txt file in your email response to us.

Mobile
These steps will show you how to export an email as a .txt file using the Proton Mail mobile app on iOS and Android.
You can also use Proton Mail in a mobile browser, but the steps will differ.
Proton on iOS
In the Proton Mail app, open the message, a) tap on the three dots, then b) tap More options.
Tap View HTML.
Tap on the share icon.
Tap Save to Files to save it as a .txt file.

Proton on Android

Outlook
The instructions below show how to export an email as an .eml file in Outlook on desktop and mobile.
Outlook Mail is a third-party platform that is not affiliated with Exodus. As such, Exodus cannot guarantee the performance of the products/services or that the steps shown and the information provided will always be accurate.
Desktop
These instructions apply to both the desktop app and the web version of Outlook.
In Outlook Mail, open the email message you want to export. a) Click on the message's menu, b) hover over Download, and click on Download as EML.

Mobile
Forwarding an email as an .eml file is supported only in the Outlook mobile app. It's not supported when using Outlook in a mobile browser.
In the Outlook mobile app, open the email message you want to export. Tap on the three dots.
Select Forward as Attachment.
iOS
Android
A new message will open, a) with the email attached as an .eml file. If Exodus Support has requested an .eml file to investigate a possible phishing attempt, b) you can send the new message with the .eml attachment to support@exodus.com.
Be sure to include any additional information in your message before sending it.
Apple Mail
These steps will show you how to export an email as an .eml file in Apple Mail on desktop and mobile.
Apple Mail is a third-party platform that is not affiliated with Exodus. As such, Exodus cannot guarantee the performance of the products/services or that the steps shown and the information provided will always be accurate.
Desktop
In Apple Mail, open the email message you want to export, a) click on File, then b) select Save As...
Next, a) select Raw Message Source as the format, and b) click Save.
Selecting Raw Message Source will save your email as a .eml file.

Some email apps may not send attachments correctly. If you're sending the .eml file to Exodus Support, to help ensure it arrives as expected, try sending it from your email provider's web version instead of the Apple Mail app.
Mobile
Open Apple Mail and tap the icon to create a new email.
In the new message, swipe down to minimize this screen.
You'll see New Message at the bottom of the screen when it's minimized.
a) Find the email you want to export as an .eml file. Tap and hold it, then b) drag it down over the minimized New Message and keep holding it until that screen opens.
You may need to hold the email for a few seconds before the screen opens.
Keep holding down your finger on the email, then drag and drop it into the body of the new message to attach it as an .eml file.
a) You'll see it's attached as an .eml file. If Exodus Support has requested an .eml file to investigate a possible phishing attempt, b) you can send the new message with the .eml attachment to support@exodus.com.
Be sure to include any additional information in your message before sending it.
