What is Exodus?
Exodus is a self-custody crypto wallet that supports 50+ crypto networks with unlimited token support on the most popular web3 networks.
No account sign-up is required because Exodus runs locally on your device. You control your assets through the 12-word secret recovery phrase and private keys that are generated when you first open your wallet.
You can start using your wallet right away. You can buy some crypto or receive crypto from another platform.
Instead of an email and password combo, what identifies your wallet and your funds is your 12-word secret recovery phrase.
Your secret recovery phrase is the most important part of your wallet! Make sure that you back up your wallet by writing down the secret recovery phrase or by storing your encrypted secret recovery phrase with iCloud or Google Drive.
Is Exodus a self-custody wallet?
Yes, Exodus is a self-custody wallet, also known as a non-custodial wallet. This means that you, and only you, have full access to and control over your 12-word secret recovery phrase and private keys.
There's a saying in crypto: "Not your keys, not your coins." Exodus is all your keys, all your coins.
Exodus can't access your secret recovery phrase or your private keys, and Exodus can't see your transaction history either.
If you're curious to learn more about this, you can visit: What information does Exodus have access to?
Do I need the internet to use Exodus?
Yes, the Exodus wallet requires an internet connection to send and receive blockchain assets.
Exodus uses market information to give you real-time updates on the value of your portfolio. If you lose access to the internet you can still open Exodus and view your portfolio, but pricing information might not be up-to-date.
You will not be able to send, receive or use the Exodus app to swap blockchain assets using our third-party exchange API providers while your wallet is offline.
How do I keep my wallet safe?
As a self-custody wallet, Exodus gives you the power to control your digital wealth. This is why we do not store any of your personal information or your wallet files on our servers. This way, nobody will ever be able to freeze, seize, or access your funds.
This is true financial sovereignty.
This is also why being security-minded is vital. You have all the power but also full responsibility for your crypto. Your wallet files are stored under heavy encryption, but your wallet is only as secure as the device it is running on.
The most important thing to learn about your wallet is how to keep your funds safe.

How do I back up my wallet?
The most important thing you can do is back up your wallet so you always have access to it.
In Exodus, you can back up your wallet by writing down your 12-word secret recovery phrase.
In Exodus Mobile, you can also back up your wallet by storing your encrypted secret recovery phrase with iCloud or Google Drive and protecting it with a passkey.
Once you have backed up your wallet, you can set a strong password. Then every time you close Exodus, your assets and wallet files will be encrypted by your password, which is an added layer of security.
12-word secret recovery phrase
If you have your secret recovery phrase, you will always have access to your wallet.
Backing up your wallet by writing down your secret recovery phrase will allow you to restore your wallet on another device at any time: How do I restore from my 12-word secret recovery phrase?
You only need to back up your wallet once. Writing down your secret recovery phrase will ensure that you can regain access to your crypto if you get a new device, or if your phone or computer breaks, gets stolen, or is lost.
You can find out how to back up your wallet on each platform here: How do I always have access to my wallet with my 12-word secret recovery phrase?
Write down your 12-word secret recovery phrase on paper and store it safely offline. Do not store your secret recovery phrase as an unencrypted digital copy. Storing your secret recovery phrase or private keys as an unencrypted digital copy (including as a photo) makes it easier for hackers to steal your funds.
Back up with iCloud or Google Drive
In Exodus Mobile, you can back up your wallet by storing your encrypted secret recovery phrase with iCloud or Google Drive.
When you back up your wallet with iCloud or Google Drive, Your secret recovery phrase is encrypted and stored as a secured file in your cloud storage account.
At the same time, your passkey manager creates and stores a passkey that is secured by the same Face ID, Touch ID, PIN, or password you use to unlock your device. This passkey is the only way to decrypt your secret recovery phrase and access your wallet.
Once you've backed up your wallet, when you download Exodus on a new phone, you can sign in with your passkey manager and iCloud or Google account to restore your wallet.
